Frequently Asked Questions
I. About the Platform
What is NetWorth Levels?
NetWorth Levels is a data-driven platform built on the concept of financial transparency. Users anonymously share their current net worth and demographic data (age, industry, location, etc.) to help others understand and assess their financial journey in the context of similar demographics, similar to how professionals use compensation data for career planning on other transparency platforms.
How do you calculate Net Worth?
Net Worth is calculated as: Total Assets - Total Liabilities.
- Assets typically include: cash & savings, retirement accounts (401k/IRA/pensions), investment accounts (stocks, ETFs, mutual funds), crypto/digital assets, primary residence equity (home value minus mortgage debt), investment properties, business ownership, vehicles, collectibles, and other valuable assets.
- Liabilities typically include: primary residence mortgage, investment property mortgages, credit card debt, student loans, and other personal debts.
- Note: We encourage you to use conservative valuations for assets and report liabilities accurately.
What are the Net Worth "Levels" I see?
The "levels" are a framework for categorizing financial metrics by age, industry, company, job position etc. While specific thresholds can vary, they are designed to give context to your financial situation and serve as motivational milestones. You can use our platform to filter data and see what others in similar demographics are reporting.
II. Data Submission and Anonymity
Is my Net Worth submission anonymous?
Yes. We are committed to protecting your privacy.
- Your Name, Exact Location, and Email are not shared with other users or publicly displayed.
- We use an anonymization system to maintain your privacy.
How accurate is the data?
The data on our platform is primarily self-reported by users. While we rely on the integrity of our users, we flag outliers or questionable submissions for manual review and potential removal. Our goal is to provide a good faith snapshot of real-world net worth data.
Why do you need my Industry, City, and Age?
This demographic information is the foundation of our entire platform. It allows users to filter the data and explore insights, such as:
- "What is the average net worth for a 30-35 year old in Tech in New York City?"
- This context is crucial for making the net worth data valuable.
III. Magic Link Login (Passwordless Authentication)
What is a Magic Link?
A Magic Link is a secure, passwordless access method that lets you view your submission without needing to create an account or remember a password. You simply receive a unique link via email that grants you access.
How do I use the Magic Link?
The process is simple:
- Enter your email address on the "View My Submission" page of the NetWorth Levels app/website.
- We will send a unique, secure link (the "Magic Link") to that email address.
- Open the email and click the link. You will be automatically and securely authorized to view your submission.
The Magic Link isn't working/has expired. What should I do?
Magic Links are designed to be secure and are valid for 30 days to allow you time to access your submission. If the link is expired or you run into an issue:
- Check your Spam/Junk folder to ensure the email was not misclassified.
- Return to the app/website and request a new link. Only the most recently generated link will be valid.
Is the Magic Link secure?
Yes. Magic Links are secure because they are:
- Unique and Secure: Each link contains a randomized, cryptographically secure token that remains valid until expiration.
- Time-Sensitive: They expire after 30 days, providing you time to access your submission while maintaining security.
- Email-Protected: Access to your account requires access to your secured email inbox.
Why don't you use a traditional password?
We prioritize ease-of-use and security. Magic Links are a form of passwordless authentication which eliminates common security risks like weak passwords, forgotten passwords, or having your password compromised in a data breach of another service.
Can I make my submission private after sharing it?
Yes! When you view your submission via the magic link, you can toggle it between public and private. Private submissions won't appear on the website, but you can always make them public again if you change your mind. This gives you full control over your data visibility.
